How we make money

  • Affiliate commissions: our only source of revenue.
  • No advertising: we run no ad network, display no banner ads, and set no advertising cookies.
  • No paid listings: a place in the directory, a ranking or a recommendation cannot be bought.
  • No paid reviews: we do not accept payment in exchange for a favourable verdict.

Editorial independence

This is the part that matters, so we will be specific rather than reassuring:

  • Affiliate relationships never determine our recommendations. We recommend tools on merit.
  • Whether a tool has an affiliate programme has no bearing on whether it is listed, where it ranks, or what we say about it. Plenty of tools we rate highly pay us nothing.
  • We say when a tool is weak, overpriced, or the wrong choice for a given job, including tools that would earn us a commission.
  • Commission rates are not a ranking factor and are not visible to us when a piece is being written.

How we form recommendations

  • Hands-on use and testing where we can get access.
  • Documented features, pricing and limits from official sources.
  • Like-for-like comparison against alternatives in the same category.
  • Fit for a defined job, since the "best" tool depends on what you need it for.

If we are ever paid for placement

We do not currently accept sponsored content. If that changes, any sponsored or paid item will be labelled clearly and prominently on the page itself, not disclosed only here, and it will never be presented as an independent recommendation.

Why we do it this way

Affiliate commissions keep the site free and independent, so we can spend our time testing tools and writing useful guides instead of putting content behind a paywall or filling pages with ads. That only works if you can trust the recommendations, which is why the rules above are firm.

Your privacy

This disclosure is made in line with the US Federal Trade Commission's guidance on endorsements and testimonials, and with comparable advertising standards elsewhere.
